How to make an exception for Surfshark in McAfee antivirus on Windows

In this article, you will learn how to make an exception for Surfshark in McAfee antivirus on Windows.

You will need the McAfee antivirus application and an active Surfshark subscription, which you can purchase on Surfshark's pricing page.

Here is what to do:

  1. Open your McAfee app.

  2. On the left menu, select My Protection.

  3. Under Device, select Real-Time Scanning.

  4. Under Excluded Files, select Add file.

  5. Navigate to the Surfshark folder. The default installation is in This PC > Windows (C:) > Program Files > Surfshark. The files you need to exclude are:

    • Surfshark.exe

    • Surfshark.Service.exe

    • SurfsharkDiagnostics.exe

  6. Repeat the steps for each file.

Check the exclusion

Open Excluded Files and make sure the files appear in the list. If it is not there, add it again.

What happens after you exclude a file

  • McAfee does not check the file during Real-Time, On-Demand, or Scheduled scans.
  • The Windows command-line scanner also skips the file.
  • If the file changes, McAfee removes it from the exclusion list and treats it as a new file.
  • If you still want to exclude the changed file, add it again.
